National Academy of Engineering virtual annual meeting set for Oct. 4-7

On October 4-7, the National Academy of Engineering will host its 56th annual meeting, on Engineering for Pandemics: Preparedness, Response, and Recovery. Plenary speakers and technical forum panelists will offer their perspectives on past pandemics, their impacts, and the role of engineering in preparing for and addressing them. The event will be held entirely online.

The public program will begin at noon EDT Sunday, Oct. 4, with remarks by NAE Chair Donald C. Winter, NAE President John L. Anderson, and the introduction of the Class of 2020. At 4:30, two plenary speakers will set the stage for this year’s topic:

• Lessons Learned: How to Prepare for Future Pandemics – David R. Walt (NAE/NAM), Hansjörg Wyss Professor of Bioinspired Engineering, Harvard Medical School

• Fighting COVID-19 with resilience – a race against time – Pam Cheng, Executive Vice President, Global Operations and Information Technology, AstraZeneca

On Monday, Oct. 5, beginning at 12:30 p.m. EDT, the forum on Engineering for Pandemics will be moderated by Deanne Bell, TV host and founder/CEO, Future Engineers. Drs. Walt and Cheng will be joined by the following panelists:

• Keeping society’s transportation systems operational – Daniel Work, Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Vanderbilt University

• The Future of Work: 15 Million New Jobs – William B. Rouse (NAE), Research Professor, McCourt School of Public Policy, Georgetown University

• Vaccine Pandemic Production & Scale-Up – Paul F. McKenzie (NAE), Chief Operating Officer, CSL Behring

• Charting Pathways out of poverty before and during the pandemic: trends in acute multidimensional poverty across the developing world – Sabina Alkire, Director, Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative

A special lecture on racial injustice and lack of equity will follow the forum, presented by John Brooks Slaughter (NAE), Professor in both the Rossier School of Education and Viterbi School of Engineering at the University of Southern California.

In addition to these talks, the NAE annual meeting will feature remarks by the 2020 Simon Ramo Founders and Arthur M. Bueche Award winners, and end with the Yvonne C. Brill Lectureship in Aerospace Engineering. Access the full agenda here.
