Musk promises Tesla Semi in late 2021, cites temporary cell shortage for delay

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company’s Semi, a Class 8 battery-electric tractor, has finished its pre-production engineering work and is ready to go to market later this year. However, the company’s limited ability to get battery cells is holding it back, he said speaking to investors on the company’s 2020 fourth-quarter earnings call Jan. 27. The call was reported by TechCrunch, CNBC and other news outlets. (Photo: Tesla) “The main reason we have not accelerated new products – like for example Tesla Semi – is that we simply don’t have enough cells for it,” Musk said on the call. “If we were to make the Semi right now, and we could easily…

Only specific shops can update Ontario trucks to SPIF rules

Ontario truck shops that want to tap into the surging demand for SPIF-compliant equipment may have a tougher time than they think. Mechanics can’t simply attach the required steerable lift axles and equalization systems based on existing rigid lift axle locations, says Jeremy Harrower, technical programs manager with the Canadian Transportation Equipment Association (CTEA). And some shops equipped to do the work are already booked throughout 2021, he adds. Jeremy Harrower of the Canadian Transportation Equipment Association stresses that the Ontario Ministry of Transportation has been sharing plans to update SPIF configurations for years — even if some groups were hoping for a Hail Mary.
